Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common medical complications of pregnancy. It is a condition in which women without previously diagnosed diabetes mellitus exhibit high blood glucose levels during pregnancy. It's associated with maternal and foetal complications. . Despite these untoward effects, there is a dearth of data on the prevalence, risk factors; practices and adverse health outcome of GDM in Northern Nigeria. Aim: The study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of GDM among women attending ANC at FTH Birnin Kebbi. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out among 130 women attending ANC at FTH, Birnin Kebbi. An interviewer administered semistructured questionnaire was used to obtain the bio-data and other relevant information. OGTT was used to diagnose GDM/DM using the 2014 WHO criteria. All information was imputed into an SPSS computer statistical software version 20 and analyzed. Results: From the study the prevalence of GDM and DM in pregnancy was 10% and 3.8% respectively. The mean age for women with normal blood glucose was 26.8±4.2 years, while women with GDM/DM were 30.8±4.6 years (t= -3.692, df = 128, p-value < 0.001). The mean BMI of women with elevated blood sugar was 31.7 ± 6.0 kg/m2 compared with those with normal blood sugar 27.6±6.0 kg/m2(t= -2.684, p = 0.008). The antenatal complications with significant association recorded were polyhydramnios (FE χ2, p < 0.001) and intrauterine fetal death (FE χ2, p = 0.049). The risk of Caesarean section was higher among women with GDM/DM (aOR= 0.314, 95% CI=0.103-0.962, p= 0.043). The babies delivered by women with GDM/DM had increase risk of neonatal jaundice (aOR= 8.727, 95% CI=1.909-39.897, p= 0.005). Conclusion: From the study the prevalence of GDM is within the reported rate from the other part of Nigeria. Some risk factors had been identified. It is associated with increase maternal and foetal complications. Public awareness and regular screening at the ANC can reduce the complications.
